A particularly tasty episode, if I do say so myself, starting off with some international cuisine. We bid adieu to Sean Buchanan and his Western States, we boogie with Los Zeppelin and shake our groove thang. We also try and get right with the Lord by going to church with Chuck Prophet and Tres Chicas, on account of the last set is guaranteed to send us to hell. You've been warned.

Last week was the PREview - This week is the REview. Folk Fest is over for another year but there's plenty to remember, in particular the many ways in which we here at the TwangTrust personally shaped many of the most memorable moments of the weekend. Yes, we think a lot of ourselves. The Swell Season, Tao Seeger, The Avetts, The Browns, The Ramseys - they're all here. Plus the sad deterioration of the minds of John Hiatt and Sonny Landreth. And Tommy Keene!

It is upon us again brothers and sisters. The time when all roots-music nerds gather together to gorge upon the musical bounty that is the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Tonight we address the most important issue of this or any other year's Folk Festival - where is the most likely place to hear a Springsteen cover? Plenty of options this year with Leeroy Stagger, The Avett Brothers, Levon Helm and The Swell Season hanging out in Birds Hill Park this year. We're thrilled that old friend Jim Bryson finally gets his Folk Fest due, too. And more tonight, on the 2010 Totally Un-official Rebel Folk Fest Preview. P.S. Be on the lookout for a new series of Official TwangTrust buttons being given out at this year's Folk Fest!

One of out favourite annual traditions on the TwangTrust for the last five years was our pre-fest visit from Dauphin Countryfest Entertainment Guru, Neil Peterson. Neil booked the big-hat acts to make some dough and keep the festival strong, but booked the smaller "TwangTrusty" acts because he loved them. Sadly, we lost Neil in April. He was one of the greatest music fans we've ever been privileged to meet and we preview his final Countryfest lineup and pay tribute to our friend tonight.

Well, we survived another Folk Fest with lots of glorious memories intact. More or less. Unfortunately, the "community" that the Folk Fest likes to harp about doesn't extend too far into our little radio scene anymore, so we don't get to talk to any of this past weekend's musical instigators - just listen to 'em. Which is plenty fine. Plus, we already have a guest today and he's live in the studio with us tonight! Please welcome to the TwangTrust for the first time, Greg MacPherson! This needs to be a four-hour show. It's not. Only 2 hours (and a bit - thanks Al!), but we make it count. Two sets of guests tonight. First up is a local hero, back in town after 25-some years - Jeffrey Hatcher, letting us know what he's up to these days and spinning a few tunes. Coupe #2: Local heroine, Romi Mayes is recording her new record this week and she comes by with a live preview. What's more, she has her producer in tow: famed guitarist and knob twirler for the likes of Lucinda Williams and Mary Gauthier, Gurf Morlix. Brand new music from both of them, and a great Willie P. cover to boot.

A serious contender for the 2006 TwangTrust Song of the Summer! (Nominate your pick now!) Some toothache-inducing power-pop, a Ron Sexsmith primer, and brand new (and old) Ronnie Spector. We lost one of the greats this past weekend. Grant McLennan, best known as the frontman of Australia's Go-Betweens, passed away of a heart attack on Saturday, May 13. I've always liked the Go-Betweens but it's Grant's solo records that really did it for me. His 1995 album Heartbreaker Star, is one of the Top 10 Alt.Country records of all time, and his rest are the cream of whatever you might want to call that particular crop. If you're not familiar with him, Part 3 of tonight's podcast is all Grant. Get to know him. Plus, we have brand new music from Fred Eaglesmith and Steve Earle, as well as some karaoke from the Thompson family.

Tonight: It's Pete Seeger's 87th birthday! Let's take an axe to some long-haired punk playing electric guitar! Well, maybe not... we do play some folk music though. Or at least TwangTrustified folk music, which includes the seminal Nick Drake, of course. Jay and Jeff face off in our Wilco vs Son Volt preview and we take a look back at guest vocalist supreme, Syd Straw.

Tonight: Everyone has a bluegrass album these days. It's epidemic. Sarah Harmer was in town on this night so we listen to her bluegrass album as well as a few other folks' bluegrass albums. What's more, is we go in the TwangTrust wayback machine and listen in to the last time we shared space with the lovely Sarah - when we coaxed a version of The Replacements' "Skyway" out of her live in the CKUW studio. Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, we can't podcast the show's tribute to the late, great Gene Pitney. Go by an album instead. The 2 disc British "Looking Through" is highly recommended.

It's hard to think of too many musicians out there today who had the phenomonal presence of Billy Cowsill. When I first heard that the guy who sang "Hair" was in a band with our beloved local hero, Jeffrey Hatcher, this aging punk-rocker couldn't help but laugh. It took a mere moment to stop laughing and start cheering when I first saw Billy fronting the Blue Shadows along with Jeff. That cool, piercing stare, the exquisite attention to musical detail and that voice! The two albums that the Blue Shadows recorded are forever positioned in my Coolest Albums Ever short list and the handful of times I saw them live are each among my fondest live music memories. Billy left us last week and tonight the TwangTrust celebrates the life and music of Billy Cowsill.

Ah, FunDrive. The one week at CKUW you hate to love. You shouldn't want to listen to us plead for money, but for some warped reason you do! Besides the usual community/hilarity justifications, there was an extra special reason to listen to the TwangTrust's FunDrive effort this year. Live in the studio - Winnipeg's finest: The Hatcher/Briggs Band! The core of this band goes back to the mid-late '70's in the Winnipeg music scene in their earliest incarnation, The Fuse. Hearing their single "Sad Eyes" on the old CJUM back in the day was a major reason that the TwangTrust exists today and it was a special treat to have David Briggs, Don & Paul Hatcher (not to mention Ken and John!) in the studio playing live with us this year. Thanks so much, guys! We join this episode of the TwangTrust in progress...

This was probably the most fun episode of the TwangTrust ever.
Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle were playing Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club that night and they stopped in beforehand to play live, spin records and drink wine. Royal Bitch, of course. Nothing but the best at CKUW.

The Ramones of country music. The very first insurgent country artist. The greatest songwriter of all time. In recent years, the TwangTrust has come to discover Roger Miller was all of these things. Criminally remembered usually as a novelty artist, I was thrilled to walk into McNally Robinson and see a brand new book about Miller on the shelf. Equally jaw-dropping was the fact that the writer was from Winnipeg. Author Lyle E. Style visits the TwangTrust to delve into stories and music about this neglected genius.
